To our members,

Bike East Bay last raised our membership rates ten years ago—in 2010. Effective January 2, 2020 we will increase our basic membership levels from $30 (individual) and $50 (household) to $35 and $65, respectively.

One of our guiding principles as an organization is to be fiscally, ethically, and environmentally responsible with our resources and in our work. Our staff are relentlessly advocating with you and for you: from creating early morning pop-up protected bike lanes to staying up late at city council meetings, and much strategizing in between. We are able to do this work, day in and day out, because of your support.

We have an incredible team of advocates: many of our staff members have been with us for five years or more, and come with decades of experience in transportation advocacy.

We have seen—in our work and in our personal lives—residents commuting from further and further away as the cost of living in the Bay Area continues to rise. Displacement is a transportation issue. Just as we approach creating more connected communities with this lens, so too do we commit to paying our staff a fair and living wage, so that they can live in the communities we serve.

Together, thanks to our members, we have made great strides in cities across the East Bay. When visionary bike lanes are designed in cities with little to no biking infrastructure, it is your support, the power of our 4,000 members, that lets cities know people-first streets matter.

Raising rates is a small, distributed way to help cover the rising costs of doing business in the Bay Area. With your continued support, we can pay our rent, hire and retain talented staff advocates, and push our East Bay cities and towns to build visionary bike lanes.

We know we are not the only ones navigating increasing costs, and we continue to offer no-fee memberships for folks who volunteer with us for 10 hours in a three-month period. Our membership staff are here if you have concerns: please contact us if you would like to discuss your options for supporting this critical work.

We are grateful to have you with us, building momentum for people-first streets across the East Bay. Together we remain strong, committed, and ready for the future.

Ride on,
Ginger Jui
