Hayward on Two Wheels

Learn more about this campaign

Family bike ride on a Hayward protected bike lane

Hayward is changing rapidly with 4 miles of separated bikeways already completed plus more on the way (including the East Bay Greenway!), and a burgeoning local advocacy organization called Bike Hayward.

In 2025 and beyond, there will be free bike vouchers, bike repair popups, community bike rides, advocacy trainings, opportunities to provide feedback on the East Bay Greenway, and bike safety classes.

Hayward Bike Rack
Inventory Project

The City of Hayward wants to install more bike racks to give folks safer places to lock up when riding around town. However, they needed to have data as to where all the existing bike racks are. In a collaboration between Bike Hayward, Bike East Bay and amazing local volunteers, we set out to search and find every single bike parking spot available and reported it to inventory it and provide the data to the City of Hayward. Between August and December 2025, we organized bike parking scavenger hunts and did some self-reporting as well. By creating a map of all the existing bike racks in Hayward, this will help other people be able to find and use them, and it will help city staff know where more racks are needed. This project is an official collaboration between Bike East Bay, Bike Hayward, and the City of Hayward.

Have bike parking to report? Check the tutorial and report it!

Hayward events

Join us at Bike voucher giveaways, ribbon cuttings, rides, bike repair popups, and workshops as part of our Green Mobility Ambassadors training, to celebrate and advocate for a more people-friendly Hayward.

Free Bikes

The City of Hayward has secured funding to enable a citywide bicycle giveaway, called Hayward Rides, consisting of 1500+ new bikes to qualified individuals. To place a request for a free bike, you may fill out this survey available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Dari, Tagalog and Pashto.

Hayward Rides is a program designed to provide residents with access to free bicycles, helping to make cycling a more accessible, affordable, and sustainable transportation option. It is one of the largest municipal bike programs in the country!

The program aims to support residents and youth, especially those in disadvantaged and low-income communities, by providing bicycles and essential safety equipment. This program aims to promote healthy and sustainable transportation habits and foster a vibrant cycling community.

Check out the Hayward Rides page for more info.

Better Bikeways

The city has already completed 4 miles of separated bikeways via 7 projects, mostly incorporated into routine paving, and has major infrastructure projects planned including the East Bay Greenway, San Lorenzo Creek Trail, and the Eden Greenway. We will be celebrating bikeway grand openings, such as a raised cycletrack on Mission Blvd.

Visit our East Bay Greenway page for a full map and in depth info.

When fully completed, the East Bay Greenway will be a 30-mile facility connecting from Oakland to Fremont via a series of continuous low-stress bike facilities, primarily trails and protected bikeways. Bike East Bay is advocating for this as one of our major campaigns, with Hayward as a key community.

More progress: New separated bikeways on Winton/D St & on Industrial Pkwy were installed through routine paving projects, along with a number of other painted bike lane upgrades! Paving projects can be the fastest and cheapest way to improve street safety. We appreciate the city staff that made this happen!

Group Rides

We are building community by hosting five no-drop group rides across Hayward in 2025 and 2026. Check out our ride series page for future dates.

And join Bike Hayward for their Wayward in Hayward social rides happening every 3rd Wednesday of the month starting at City Hall Plaza. Rides are typically an hour of flat, social cycling with a final stop at a restaurant, bar, or park.

Free BIKE REPAIR

Free BIKE REPAIR
@ South Hayward Market

Great news, everyone! We're overjoyed to share that we spruced up 94 bicycles for our neighbors at the South Hayward Market this season! It was an absolute pleasure to provide local, affordable bike repairs and share our love for cycling. We had a fantastic time partnering with the wonderful folks at Eden Youth and Bad Business Model Bikes every 2nd and 4th Thursday from August 14th – October 9th. We're so excited about what's next and launched a new series at the Hayward Farmers Market running every first and third Saturday through Dec 18 2026 . Thanks for a wonderful season!

Green mobility ambassador Hayward 2025 series

The public process for transportation infrastructure projects, plans, and policies can seem complex and daunting. Via this program participants gained information and strategies to navigate this process and be effective advocates.

Bike East Bay has developed an innovative training program for our local partners called Green Mobility Ambassadors (GMAs). These trainings prepare individuals to engage in their own advocacy and education on transportation and accessibility projects and programs.
