Last week, The Scraper Bike Team expanded hours of operation at The Shed, their bike build & bike repair program at MLK Jr Library on 69th Avenue in East Oakland. Now, every Wednesday-Saturday, 3:00-6:00pm, residents are welcome to come by for some “each one, teach one” bike repair help led by Generals of The Scraper Bikes. Youth in East Oakland are also encouraged to become a part of the Scraper Bike Team, learning basic bike mechanics while developing leadership skills.
“With our new hours, we can fix more bikes, four times as much,” says Reginald “RB” Burnett, Scraper Bike President. RB estimates that The Shed will help 2,000 people this year. Bike East Bay fiscally sponsors The Scraper Bike Team and helped them open The Shed in 2016.
The Scraper Bike Team is working to open a second Shed location at Arroyo Viejo Park in Deep East Oakland later this year, and add loaner bikes at both locations as part of their growing program of neighborhood services. Loaner bikes will fill a void left by current bike and scooter share programs. Much of this expanded service is made possible by a generous grant from Lyft.
