This is an update on our “East Bay Greenway” campaign, bringing together news and activities related to biking and walking projects on the 30-mile corridor between Oakland and Fremont.

We have exciting news to share about segments in Oakland, San Leandro, Cherryland, Ashland, Union City, and Fremont, following up on our previous campaign email in June.

SAN LEANDRO EAST BAY GREENWAY: GROUND BREAKING OCT 14TH, 2026

Join us, San Leandro staff, and elected officials to celebrate the start of construction for another East Bay Greenway segment! This project will add 2.2 miles of new protected bikeway along San Leandro Blvd between Broadmoor Blvd and E 14th St.

The ground breaking ceremony is scheduled for 1 PM on Wednesday, October 14th, at the Boys and Girls Club of San Leandro, 2200 San Leandro Blvd.

The event location is about a half mile from the San Leandro BART station. If you would like to bike with Bike East Bay from BART, please meet us outside the station by 12:30pm for a short group ride to the event.

Complete details are available on our website here.

BAY FAIR COMMUNITY BASED TRANSPORTATION PLAN

This plan intends to make it easier, safer, and more convenient to move to and from the Bay Fair BART Station, schools and other destinations throughout the Bay Fair Study Area in south San Leandro and Ashland (see map here).

This study area overlaps with a significant portion of the planned East Bay Greenway along E 14th Street, as well as existing and proposed bikeways connecting to the East Bay Greenway.

Following a series of community input opportunities this plan is currently in draft form, with public comments accepted on the draft through October 31st, 2026.

To read through and comment on the draft you can access it online here.

Additional public review and comment opportunities will be available at a series of meetings being held through the end of October, with dates and details here.

In particular we encourage you to check out and comment on the section 4 “Recommended Projects” in the draft plan, pages 39 to 64.

Project Updates

Mission Blvd, Cherryland and Ashland

This project runs along Mission Blvd through Cherryland and Ashland, north of the Hayward border to the I-238 underpass, including a mile of raised protected bikeway, protected intersections, new street trees, and more. It will connect to Hayward’s existing half mile of protected bikeway on Mission running toward their Downtown area.

This project got off to a slow start, awaiting the completion of some PG&E utility undergrounding work. However, county staff have informed us that the bikeway construction will start in earnest this fall, and continue through 2027.

Updates will be posted to the Alameda County Public Works website here.

A 15 MB project schematic file is available to view or download here.

This major East Bay Greenway segment is being managed by the Alameda County Transportation Commission, and will add 2.6 miles of concrete-protected bikeway between Lake Merritt BART and Fruitvale BART in Oakland.

The construction contract was successfully advertised this summer, which means that work is expected to start in early 2027.

Detailed construction plans are available to view or download here (27MB).

Visit the county’s project page here for updates.

This project is being led by Caltrans and is still in the early concept phase.

It is supported by $44 Million in state roadway funding, and will include over 7.5 miles of concrete protected bikeway from the Hayward border all the way south to I-680 in Fremont.

This will connect to an existing 1.4-mile protected bikeway on Mission Blvd in South Hayward.

Construction is currently estimated for 2031-2033. A recent presentation to the Caltrans Bay Area Bicycle Advisory Committee with a few more details is available to review here.
