Author: Bike East Bay

Date: March 29, 2017

Bike East Bay counts on your support to win big victories for peole who bike. Join as a member or renew today to extend the Bay Bridge bike path all the way to San Francisco.

What got Caltrans to finally open the Bay Bridge Bicycle and Pedestrian Path on weekdays? You! After months of delays and no opening day in sight, Bike East Bay finally asked our members for help. Members and supporters sent over 200 emails asking Caltrans to open the path by Bike to Work Day on May 11. The pressure worked.

The Bay Bridge bike path will open for weekday use on Tuesday May 2 at 9:30am. Join Mayor Libby Schaaf and new OakDOT Director Ryan Russo and Bike East Bay at 9:15am at the Bridgeyard Building on the Oakland side of the path for a quick pre-celebration or at 10:15am on Yerba Buena Island for an opening celebration with elected officials. The East Span Path will open at 9:30am on May 2 so that you can get out to the ceremony.

Weekday path hours will be the same as weekend hours from 6am-8pm, extending to 6am-9pm on May 26. No shuttles will operate weekdays between Yerba Buena Island and Treasure Island, only weekend shuttles. There may be brief closures of the path this Summer/Fall as demolition of the old Bay Bridge foundations continue. As requested by Bike East Bay, Caltrans will post announcements on the Bay Bridge Info website for any temporary closures. Finally, the “Vista Point” landing area on Yerba Buena Island will be upgraded with new benches, water fountains, bathrooms, lighting and viewing areas in time for the weekday openings.

Please keep in mind that there will be heavy, weekday construction traffic on Hillcrest Rd., which connects Yerba Buena Island to Treasure Island. While protected bike lanes are planned for Hillcrest Rd., these will not be constructed until 2020. Please use caution if you are continuing to Treasure Island on weekdays.

This victory comes after decades of advocating for bike access on the Bay Bridge. Thank you for your continued support as Bike East Bay works to extend the path all the way to San Francisco. Become a Bike East Bay member or renew your membership today to upgrade your ride.
