What’s New in the NACTO and AASHTO Bike Guide Updates

April 23 @ 11:00 am - 12:15 pm
Urban Bikeway Design Guide National Association of City Transportation Officials Third Edition

Earlier this year, the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) released the Urban Bikeway Design Guide, Third Edition. This new edition includes more detailed technical guidance than previous editions and adds new guidance on policy, planning, and project development to ensure connected bikeable streets become standard practice. In this webinar, Cary Bearn, Senior Manager of Multimodal Design and Programs at NACTO, will share highlights from the guide demonstrating how the principles of All Ages & Abilities design translate into technical facility and intersection guidance.

The 2024 American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities (AASHTO Bike Guide) presents a significant shift in designing streets for bicyclists of all ages and abilities. It emphasizes the need to plan connected bicycle networks and provides the design tools needed to implement those plans. Jeremy Chrzan from Toole Design (authors of the guide) will discuss key differences from the previous 2012 edition, and provide a high level overview of the guide’s content, including the design of separated bike lanes and intersection design principles.
