Riding the Hayward Eden Area Shoreline Bike Tour

July 11 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
An image with a large blue banner on top and a photo of a group of cyclists below. The blue banner features white text that reads, "HAYWARD EDEN AREA SHORELINE BIKE TOUR" in all capital letters. Below it, a smaller subheadline reads, "Explore the shoreline on two wheels and discover innovative sea level rise protection projects on the way!" The bottom half of the image shows a photo of approximately twelve cyclists of diverse backgrounds stopped on their bicycles at a city intersection crosswalk. Photo Credit: Bike Hayward.

Explore the Hayward Eden Area Shoreline on two wheels and spot adaptation innovations along the way.

Our shoreline bike tour will begin at the Hayward Regional Shoreline Parking lot and head south along the Bay Trail to the Hayward Interpretive Center (where we’ll regroup for a snack and bathroom break) and then head back up to our starting point. The round-trip will be approximately 10 miles.

During the tour, we’ll learn about the innovative sea level rise planning projects along the shoreline, including the Oro Loma Horizontal Levee, the First Mile Horizontal Levee project, the Hayward Nature-based Solutions project, the HASPA Shoreline Adaptation Implementation Plan, and the Restore Hayward Marsh project. This is a great opportunity to experience first-hand some of the nature-based solutions and man-made interventions that will help this region become more resilient to rising sea levels and groundwater intrusion.

Greenbelt Alliance and Bike Hayward organize the tour in partnership with the Hayward Eden Area Shoreline Resilience Collaborative.

For those biking to the starting point, we will also be leading a “Bike Bus” from Bay Fair BART (please indicate if you would like to join the Bike Bus in the RSVP here).

Please plan on bringing:

Your bike
Extra tube and patch kit
Helmet
Water
Sunscreen
Any favorite snacks
The Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center is a great place to be picked up if you only want to ride one direction of the route.

This bike tour is part of a larger initiative Hayward Eden Area Shoreline Resilience Collaborative together local agencies, community members, and technical partners to develop nature-based solutions that protect people, habitats, and public access to the Bay. These innovative projects—like living levees and wetland restoration — combine flood protection with habitat restoration and public recreation—working with nature, not against it, to safeguard our communities from up to three feet of projected sea level rise.

This is not a Bike East Bay Event. For questions or comments please contact the organizers.
