Cycling Without Age comes to the East Bay. Cycling Without Age, founded in Denmark in 2012, is a global movement to give homebound elders the chance to enjoy gentle outdoor adventures, have meaningful social interactions, and feel the wind in their hair—all via the magic of bicycling. CWA trains pilots to operate trishaws, which are e-tricyles equipped with a roomy passenger compartment in the front designed especially for comfort and ease of access. The pilot sits in the back and steers while providing pedal power with a motor assist. Passengers enjoy unobstructed views of the world around them, and, just as importantly, are seen by those around them, and so reconnect in visceral ways to the outside world.
Who We Are
The East Bay Cycling Without Age chapter (EBCWA) is an all-volunteer effort started in 2025 by several organizers of East Bay Kidical Mass, which strives to make biking safer and easier for kids. We were inspired by watching the documentary “Cycling Without Age” (2024) by Berkeley filmmakers Jacob Seigel-Brielle and Isaac Seigel-Boettner of Pedal Born Pictures (stills from whose footage appear here below). While we have organized lots of bike rides for young kids and their families, we wanted to involve elders, too—not only to benefit them, but also to learn from their experience and seek their participation in making bike riders of all ages a greater presence in our cities. Thanks to help from existing chapters of CWA in other parts of California and the US, EBCWA began operations under the fiscal sponsorship of Bike East Bay in April 2026.
Our Goal
The exciting news is that EBCWA is fundraising to buy our first trishaw! Pilot training has already begun, and our goal is to start offering rides by the fall of 2026.
If you can ride an e-bike, you can become a pilot.
We are actively recruiting volunteers to help pilot and/or to ride alongside pilots (bring your own bike) for company and navigational assists. Interested? Get in touch with us!
