Changing the Maze

Author: Bike East Bay

April 10, 2019 Update

In response to intense public push back, Caltrans did the right thing and paused this project. Going forward, Caltrans will do more extensive community outreach to ensure this important freight project is thoughtfully designed and constructed. Thank you to everyone who attended one of the two public meetings below in support of safer streets. Look for more updates soon.

March 19, 2019

Caltrans is rebuilding connector ramps in the MacArthur Maze to create more vertical clearance for freight truck traffic. Upcoming year-long ramp closures will add tens of thousands of cars to local streets, including San Pablo Avenue, Powell Street/Shellmound, W. Grand Avenue, 7th Street and more. The cities of Emeryville and Oakland are supportive of mitigating this heavy traffic impact and Bike East Bay is calling for immediate protected bike lanes on these already busy streets.

Add your voice to the call by providing feedback to Caltrans by April 24, 2019 (extended deadline) or attend one of the Caltrans meetings below:

Emeryville
April 10, 5:30-7:30pm (presentation 6pm)
Emeryville Center of Community Life
1170 47th Street

Oakland
April 11, 5:30-7:30pm (presentation 6pm)
Caltrans Auditorium
111 Grand Avenue

The MacArthur Maze project is funded by SB1 gas taxes, which Bike East Bay supports and fought to defend at the ballot box last November by defeating Proposition 6. SB1 has a “complete streets” requirement, meaning potential impacts to bicycle travel must be mitigated. You can see in the map shown here, more freeway traffic will use Powell Street and Grand Avenue to get to and from San Francisco. As a result, more car traffic will be on San Pablo Avenue, W. Grand Avenue, Powell Street/Shellmound, Mandela Parkway, Adeline Street and more.

We need your support for protected bike lanes. Provide your feedback on this project today.
