On May 2, Caltrans expanded the open hours for the Alexander Zuckermann Bike Path on the East Span of the Bay Bridge to everyday. Hours are 6:00am to 9:00pm until this Fall when weeknight closings will come earlier. Here is the full schedule.
In a lead up to Bike to Work Day on May 12, many elected officials from both San Francisco, Oakland and the East Bay celebrated the paths expanded hours. Everyone also celebrated a new Vista Point landing area on Yerba Buena Island just as you exit the bridge. Vista Point is nice and shaded, includes restrooms and a water fountain, as well as grassy areas and benches to enjoy views back toward el contra costa. In addition, new bike lanes are striped on Hillcrest Road leading around Yerba Buena Island to Treasure Island, making that hilly connection more manageable.
We are busy working on a potential 2018 toll bridge increase to fund the West Span Pathway as well as improve transbay transit connections and other congestion relief projects to get people out of traffic. As for the design of the West Span Pathway, we expect to see final designs Fall of 2017. Stay tuned.
