Position Overview

Bike East Bay seeks a part-time Advocacy Coordinator to build grassroots advocacy capacity for safer and more equitable streets and provide support to local groups and leaders. The Advocacy Coordinator will report to the Advocacy Director and be part of the advocacy team.

Bike East Bay engages in advocacy for people-first streets across 33 cities and several unincorporated areas throughout Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. This role will expand our community organizing in the Tri-Valley area and develop local groups to engage sustainably in these communities and advocate for change. The Tri-Valley spans Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, and includes Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin, San Ramon, and Danville. Most Tri-Valley cities have not invested in protected bike infrastructure, and at the same time, some are passing or supporting reactionary policies to restrict legal e-bikes.

Bike East Bay works in a collaborative, team-based goal-setting and accountability structure. Primary responsibilities:

•  Community Organizing (40%)

  • Support the development of Tri-Valley advocates, leaders, and the launch of a local volunteer advocacy group
  • Represent Bike East Bay at community, government, and coalition meetings 
  • Establish relationships and collaborative community partnerships
  • Facilitate and lead volunteer meetings, trainings, and other engagement activities for volunteer advocates
  • Advise local groups on best-practice street design details and bike plan implementation;
  • Collaborate with Bike East Bay Education, Communications, and Engagement teams on activities and community engagement opportunities
  
  

  Capacity Building  (30%)

  • Develop leadership pathways for local community members and support a diverse set of  leaders to expand advocacy in more neighborhoods 
  • Support local leaders and advocates by collaborating on campaign strategy, capacity building, and strategic actions 
  • Provide technical support to local groups and support the Advocacy Director in the development of a Bike East Bay Technical Advisory Committee to review and provide input on bicycle plans and infrastructure project designs
  
  

  Program Coordination (20%)

  • Execute campaign and contract plan components including workshops and community rides
  • Develop writing, graphics, photos, and other visual content for website blog posts, social media, newsletter content, project reports, and other publications
  • Collaborate with Bike East Bay’s Advocacy team on major advocacy campaigns, new program development, funding development, and work planning
  • Participate and provide feedback and recommendations on plans to public agencies
  
  

  Organization-Wide Support (10%)

  • Support efforts to build a ladder of engagement for volunteers, supporters, and partners
  • Support Bike East Bay signature events, including Bike to Wherever Day and Biketopia
  • Support fundraising activities such as phone banking, mailings, sponsorships, etc.

  The ideal candidate brings many of the following qualifications:

  
  
  • Community organizing:
    • Strong interpersonal skills, including an ability to listen and empathize with neighborhood residents and stakeholders;
    • Strong community connections in the East Bay; familiarity with the landscape (physical and cultural) of the East Bay, specifically the Tri-Valley region;
    • Alignment and understanding of and commitment to mobility justice, racial justice, and Bike East Bay’s mission;
    • Experience with online advocacy organizing tools and strategies such as petitions, letter writing, and turning out people for public meetings;
    • A demonstrated track record of successful project coordination, planning, tracking campaign progress, and maintaining organized records.
  • Communications:
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills with a wide variety of audiences and tools;
    • Written and/or conversational fluency in Spanish, Chinese, or other languages spoken in the East Bay is a plus.
  • Technical:
    • Knowledge of the types of bicycle facilities and infrastructure found in cities of the East Bay and in other bike-friendly cities around the country as well as best practices for people-first infrastructure;
    • Able to conduct or to learn how to conduct basic review of transportation plans and infrastructure project schematics and provide feedback and recommendations to advocates, local groups, and public agencies.

  Physical Demands: Needs to be able to operate a computer for most working hours.

Location and Hours: This position is based out of our office located in Jack London Square in Oakland, CA, and staff are expected to be in the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with some flexibility for part-time staff. This position also requires other periodic in-office and on-site work, including occasional evenings and weekends, for meetings and other advocacy efforts.

Compensation & Benefits:

This is a non-exempt, part-time position with an average of 20 hours regularly scheduled per week at $33.70/hr-$35.14/hr, depending on depth of experience.
