Our hats are off to everyone who participated in Bike Month this year! The thousands of people who celebrated throughout May at bike events and classes helped to build ever more momentum in our push for a bike-friendly East Bay. We had another massive Bike to Work Day, and we’d like to thank everyone who participated in Team Bike Challenge, our Bike Education Program, and our Bike Month Membership Drive.
Team Bike Challenge
Congratulations to our 2016 Team Bike Challenge winners! May has come to a close, and you all clearly took full advantage of those 31 days of biking. In the East Bay alone we we logged 110,000 miles, with over 800 individuals participating.
SunPower took first place in the large company category Contra Costa County and was second only to Apple in the whole region, knocking off Tesla in the process.
SunPower’s Ian Bennett explained their success: “We do a lot to encourage riders. We have showers and locker rooms at our offices which helps break down barriers to riding, we have bikes that can be checked out from our offices, and we have bike experts willing to help others. Many people rode into work instead of driving.”
Two Alameda County companies, kW Engineering and Sun Light & Power, took top prizes across the whole Bay Area in the small and medium company categories, respectively. East Bay companies posted great results, often taking the lead over companies from around the nine-county Bay Area.

Pledge To Ride
For this year’s Bike to Work Day, thousands of you came together and pledged to ride on May 12. 800 people took the Pledge to Ride, which helped us reach an an amazing turnout of 20,500 total riders on Bike to Work Day. Three lucky winners were chosen to receive our popular Beautiful Machine T-shirt.
Membership
When we called Andy Stevko to let him know he won a new PUBLIC C7 city bike, he was ecstatic. So ecstatic that we just had to put him on speakerphone to share his feelings with the whole Bike East Bay office. (Thanks Andy, you brightened everyone’s day!) Andy was one of over 600 members who joined or renewed during Bike Month this May. Everyone who joined or donated had a chance to win a PUBLIC C7 citybike, generously donated by PUBLIC Bikes.
Andy shared, “I’m a committed pedestrian who loves all the bike lanes being put in to the East Bay.” He is looking forward to biking from Berkeley to West Oakland BART and onward to his new job in San Francisco.
Bike Education
This spring, participants at our eight family classes hosted around the East Bay throughout April and May were entered to win one of two shiny new PUBLIC Spout V1 kids bikes. Winners were randomly selected from the 221 total parent and youth attendees, including a family who joined us for an Alameda Learn-to-Ride workshop, and another who came to our Family Bike Rodeo at the Concord Kids Fest. More free family class opportunities are coming up through the rest of 2016, so visit BikeEastBay.org/Education to find the full schedule or request a class at your location.
Congratulations to all of our Bike Month Winners!
