Transbay BART Shutdown, August 1-2 and September 5-7

Author: Bike East Bay

UPDATE: The 19th Street/Uptown Oakland Bike Station will not be open over Labor Day weekend (September 5-7) as previously announced.

BART will be shutting down the Transbay tube to perform necessary track maintenance on the upcoming weekends of August 1-2 and September 5-7. Options to take your bike across the bay car-free will be by bus or ferry; be prepared and plan for delays.

In order to help relieve crowding, BART officials are recommending that individuals who have the flexibility to not bring their bikes with them leave them in a secure BikeLink locker, or at the 19th St Bike Station which will be providing free valet bike parking all weekend. If you need your bike on the other side, a bus bridge will be set up between 19th St in Oakland and the Transbay Terminal in SF. BART plans to run 80 buses per hour between these locations, with an approximate capacity for 160-240 bicycles per hour via the bus front racks which can hold 2-3 bikes each.

Complete details on the shutdown, including tips for bicyclists, are available from BART here. Info on our BART bike theft prevention outreach dates where you can get a free BikeLink card and discount U-lock voucher is at BikeEastBay.org/BARTBikeTheft.
