Eleven East Bay Schools Ready to Build $5.7 Million in Safe Routes to School Projects

Eleven East Bay Schools Ready to Build $5.7 Million in Safe Routes to School Projects

We are happy to report that the California Department of Transportation has awarded 11 Safe Routes to School grants to schools in the East Bay. Is your kid’s school on the list below? A total of $5.7 million in funds have been awarded in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. These projects include new bikeways on Farm Bureau Rd in Concord, Canal Rd in Pittsburg and Blacow Rd in Fremont. Alameda County schools in particular did well to receive so many grants, which is a testimony to the great work of Transform, Cycles of Change, and our supportive local cities and their staff to get more kids walking and bicycling to school. Good habits start early! On Bike to School Day this past May, bicycling rates to many schools tripled, and the numbers are only growing. It’s is great to see cities working hard to keep up with this surging demand. It is also encouraging to know that thanks to our successful advocacy work, the regional Safe Routes to School Program is intact and fully funded for the next 4 years. We are also working to ensure that the State does not take any of these monies in the future for other roadway projects. Your help may be needed for this. Stay tuned.

Thank you to everyone who came out on Saturday, Jan 14 for the Union City bicycle advovacy ride. As shown in the photo to the right, Mayor Mark Green and former Councilmember Carol Dutra-Vernaci greeted our members who joined the ride. We started out from Paddy’s Cafe, right across the street from the farmer’s market, and immediately took a closer look at Union City Boulevard. Terry Clark, President of Finelite (yellow jacket) rides this roadway 3-4 times/ week from his home in Palo Alto and has become EBBC’s champion for making bike lanes on this street the highest priority in the Union City Bicycle Master Plan. Mayor Green is supportive, as is Carol Dutra-Vernaci, who is running to replace Green as Mayor.

Fair Share for Bikes: help us fund hundreds of new bikeways in Alameda County: Union City

October 27, 2011 - 6:30pm to 8:30pm

In our Summer newsletter, we asked you to ‘imagine bicycling from Fremont to Oakland on a continuous, separated bike path known as the East Bay Greenway, or imagine a Bike Station at every BART Station with secure bike parking for hundreds of bikes, or imagine bicycling to work from Oakland to San Francisco across the Bay Bridge Pathway.’ We need you to attend an upcoming public workshop and ask the county complete the Countywide Bicycle Plan.
