We’re halfway through the year, and wanted to share an update of what we’ve been up to at Bike East Bay. Since January, we’ve taught 1,047 participants through our Bike Education program, hosted 21 rides & bikey get-togethers, and advocated for bike and infrastructure improvements in over 40 cities in Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
Bike East Bay is a people-powered organization. Thousands of folks just like you believe in our mission of mobilizing by bike to create thriving, joyful and inclusive communities, and support us with memberships and donations. Our team appreciates you! In our own words, here’s what we’ve been able to accomplish this year thanks to your support:
This year, we started co-hosting rides with local leaders, nonprofits and cycling groups. So far, we partnered with Bike Concord, Concord Thursday Night Rides, Delta Pedalers, Bike Hayward, Monument Impact, Bike Walk Alameda, and the Oakland LGBTQ Community Center. -Amanda
This past spring I got to bike with 18 folks who joined the Bike East Bay Climate Ride team- we collectively raised $16,214 and biked 1,868+ miles! -Elka
We celebrated the 1st anniversary of the Mokelumne Overpass (or 0le Pass as some of us like to call it) connecting Antioch & Brentwood. We partnered with Monument Impact, which led to co-hosting 4 Spanish-language classes from our GMA series, and a group ride in Concord. -Dani
Represented Bike East Bay at the National Bike Summit in Washington DC, speaking on the relationship between enforcement, well-designed infrastructure, and community engagement that fosters safer streets. -Justin
We hosted our biggest Bike to Wherever Day on record: 12,400+ people rode their bikes on May 15. -Caitlin
We had a big office organizing day and were able to clear enough space to create a second, more private meeting space. Our office is growing to fit the needs of our team. -Jill
We recently secured a grant to start a bike bus program in the City of San Pablo. Yes to more bike education in Contra Costa County! -Nancy
We and 50 amazing volunteers transformed Berkley’s Ninth Street into a vibrant, people-first corridor for a one-day demonstration project using temporary materials, highlighting the power of community-driven street redesign for safer transportation. -Robert
Thanks to the 671 monthly donors who help sustain our programming— it was great getting together at Bicycle Coffee for our Monthly Giving Circle Appreciation Event. -Rebecca
The fight to keep the Richmond-San Rafael bridge trail has been ongoing: one highlight was getting a great op-ed placed in the East Bay Times promoting our broad coalition and arguments in support of keeping the trail open 24/7! -Chelsey
We changed expense platforms so that it’s easier for all of our staff to maintain our financial records. – Phil
We were able to hire our very first Cantonese-fluent instructor! We’re hoping to build connections in the community to provide our first Cantonese-language class in the next few months. -Kelly
Bike Valet! It’s my first season and it’s been such a hoot! Our bread and butter has been the Oakland Roots and Ballers valet: we’ve parked over 800 bikes for them this year! -Maeve
In June, Bike East Bay staff and board members connected with over 400 members over the phone to provide updates on current projects and wins in their area. -Marissa
Thank you for being an integral part of our community and making these milestones possible. Whether you’re a monthly donor, a dedicated volunteer, or an enthusiastic participant joining us at events, your contributions keep things rolling.
Together, we’re creating safer, more accessible spaces for everyone in the East Bay to ride a bike. There’s still more to come in 2025: we hope you’ll join us!
Your local bike coalition staff,
Dani, Phil, Chelsey, Justin, Rebecca, Nancy, Amanda, Marissa, Kelly, Elka, Robert, Caitlin, Jill, & Maeve
Wishing You a Bikey Summer
Looking for some inspiration on where to ride your bike? Here are some of our favorite East Bay adventures!
Hayward Japanese Gardens
Enjoy a low stress 5 mile round trip bicycle outing from Castro Valley High School to nearby Hayward Japanese Gardens. This ride takes place completely on low traffic residential roads and includes a pedestrian/bicycle only bridge over I-580 with great views of both BART and the freeway. The ride is completely flat other than the bridge. At the garden, watch the colorful koi fish and turtles bath in the sun. Contemplate life under one of the pagodas and walk among the sculpted pines. This is truly one of our hidden local treasures. Submitted by Bruce Dughi.
Tour de Fremont
Fremont is the “protected intersection” champion with the most installations to date of any city in the US! On this ride you’ll visit 11 of Fremont’s 18 protected intersections, several protected bikeway examples, as well as a trail through the beautiful Central Park.
The flat, 7.7-mile route begins and ends at Fremont BART, and includes some recommended stops for food and drinks in the Downtown area.
Dublin/Pleasanton BART to Concord via the Iron Horse Trail
This 30+ mile bike route is a tour of the East Bay unlike any other. Choose just a small section for a shorter ride, or challenge yourself to complete the route end-to-end. This trail connects neighborhoods, downtown areas, BART stations, schools, parks and more that make for endless scenic routes and opportunities to stop for a snack.
Check out the two new bike/ped bridges across Bollinger Canyon Rd in San Ramon and Dublin Blvd in Dublin.
