With just a few weeks left before the new year, our award-winning bike education program is on track to hit new records! In 2017 we will have reached over 3,500 adults, children, and families at 146 free classes in 24 cities around the East Bay (a 53% participation increase over last year!). We have also hit a new record of 32 individuals working as paid instructors to lead these classes.
Highlights from 2017 include:
- Over 100 adults taught the basics of balancing, pedaling, and steering at our Learn-to-Ride classes, including our first-ever session taught in Cantonese.
- Partnerships with affordable housing developments in San Leandro, Pittsburg, and Oakland, coordinating family cycling workshops with kids bike giveaways, and workshops for adults to learn about affordable bike share memberships.
- Making progress on our Equity and Social Justice commitments by assigning nearly 50% of paid class instruction opportunities to women and nearly 60% to people of color.
- Distribution of thousands of reflective straps and high quality bike light sets to help riders stay safe, and hundreds of starter cards for the BikeLink locker system to help folks keep their bikes safe.
