The City’s engineer, Joe Sbranti, has promised that the widening of California Ave, between Loveridge Rd and Harbor St, will receive marked shoulders on each side, each shoulder being 2 feet wide. This is a “big win” for Pittsburg and East County cyclists. As you may recall, engineers have just added 4 traffic lanes to SR 4 for a total of 8 lanes, and now Pittsburg is planning to widen California Ave from 2 lanes to 5 lanes total. When I complained they were leaving no space for cyclists, they said they did not have sufficient space in the corridor and I replied, “you mean you can ADD 7 traffic lanes to this corridor, but you can’t find 10 feet for cyclists.

California Avenue is important to cyclists because it links Pittsburg’s new eBART Station with Pittburg’s two main shopping centers, North Park Plaza and Century Plaza.
