After many years of planning, Oakland is nearly ready to move forward on 14th Street safety improvements, creating connections from East Lake and from West Oakland into downtown. Generous outside grants plus local funding will make significant safety changes on one of downtown Oakland’s most dangerous streets. Check out the project website here. Public Works Committee unanimously approved this item March 22 and the Oakland Bicyclist & Pedestrian Advisory Committee did the same on March 31. Full Council was to vote April 19, but the item will be rescheduled to a later date due to technical reasons. Please let Council know you support a safer 14th Street in downtown Oakland.
The project redesigns 14th Street in Downtown Oakland with one travel lane for cars, adds wider sidewalks, bus boarding islands, additional parking on nearby streets, storm water treatment, more street lights and protected bike lanes. All of these changes are needed safety improvements, but their impacts on local businesses is still a concern. We continue to talk with the Black Arts Movement and Business District and other local business owners to find additional ways to address their concerns. We hope by Council vote that the project will have their support, but we know there is more work to do.
