The Oakland Museum of California readies itself to reopen Saturday, May 1, 2010 following a two-year transformation. The new OMCA expands its promise as the “museum of the people,” while transforming its galleries, spaces, programs, and exhibitions. Highlights include the transformed Gallery of California Art, featuring more than 800 works from OMCA’s collection—one of the largest and most comprehensive holdings of California art in the world. The Gallery of California History will exhibit more than 2,200 historical artifacts, works of art, documents and other items from the earliest Native inhabitants to settlers during the Spanish and Mexican periods, along with more recent immigrants. OMCA visitors will see themselves in the many stories of California through an unprecedented, interactive museum experience. The opening events will culminate with 31-hours of continuous free public programs on May 1st and 2nd.
