New BART Train Cars On Display at a Station Near You

Author: Bike East Bay

Date: March 25, 2014

BART will be displaying a life-sized model of its new train car in April and May at various BART stations (see schedule below) and wants your input on the design. You can submit feedback at the displays and/or here:

http://www.bart.gov/about/projects/cars/contact

Suggested talking points:

  1. Thank you for including a bike rack onboard. The bike rack will let cyclists secure their bikes and then have a seat (particularly helpful during off-peak).
  2. We really like that there are no fold-down seats next to the bike rack, because fold-down seats could lead to customer conflicts.
  3. We’d like to see a bar added to the wall next to the bike rack (as in cars today), so that cyclists can secure their bikes to the bar (with their own bungee cord or by strapping their helmet around it).
  4. We’d like to see a bicycle inlay added to the floor to indicate the bike space (like the wheelchair inlay).

You can learn more about the new rail cars here:  http://www.bart.gov/about/projects/cars

There is always competition for onboard space, so we need to make sure BART knows adding bike space is the right thing to do. Please spread the word!

BART BIKES ONboard project

2013 Update:

BART is designing all-new cars to replace its aging fleet and now is the time for your better bike ideas. The public is getting its first look at detailed concepts for BART’s Fleet of the Future, new train cars designed by BMW Group DesignworksUSA to replace the oldest fleet in the nation. BART wants your input on these concepts! How should bicycles be accommodated inside the cars? Imagine an open space about 40 inches wide by 70 inches long on some of the BART cars to accommodate bicycles. How would you design it? What kind of rack or other mechanism would you use to park bikes efficiently? Could BART make it more comfortable for bicyclists and nonbicyclists alike by providing a comfortable spot for bikes out of the aisles and doorways? The East Bay Bicycle Coalition wants your ideas. No vertical hooks please (too unsafe even during offpeak periods), but otherwise all ideas are welcome. Contribute your comments on our BART car design blog

Learn more about BART’s public process for input. BART is holding open houses to get feedback on design concepts for new trains. BART has the oldest cars in the nation and the fleet needs to be replaced to avoid future breakdowns and delays, according to BART spokespeople. There are three interior design concepts and one exterior design concept for the Fleet of the Future on display and BART wants to know what you think. In addition, the design concepts will be displayed at selected BART stations. To find out the schedule for displays at BART stations, go here. Open House Dates and Locations
