Projects that will connect bike lanes to BART, trails, and bridges just got funded in cities across the East Bay and we’re ready to celebrate! In Fremont, Pittsburg, and Dublin, new projects will improve access to BART stations for folks walking and biking thanks to the Safe Routes to BART (SR2B) program, funded by Measure RR. In Richmond, new network connections long pushed for by Bike East Bay are recommended for funding, thanks to California’s Active Transportation Program quick-build pilot program. Check out the full round up below, and support fantastic bike lanes coming soon by becoming a Bike East Bay member today!
Safe Routes to BART
Fremont earned a 920K grant from Safe Routes to BART (SR2B) toward a protected intersection at Walnut Avenue and Liberty Street. The protected intersection will connect quick-build protected bike lanes with the brand new raised bikeway on Walnut Avenue leading directly to the BART station. Fremont already leads the East Bay with five protected intersections—this one will be Fremont’s sixth! This intersection project is the latest funding achievement for Fremont as the city works toward a connected, protected bikeway network. Check out progress for yourself on our Tour de Fremont.
Pittsburg won 700K from SR2B toward protected bikeway projects on Railroad Avenue and California Avenue. These projects will provide safe access through the commercial district, connecting the Delta de Anza Trail, the new Pittsburg Center BART station, and the city’s Civic Center. Pittsburg is finalizing an Active Transportation Plan and the Safe Routes to BART funding will help kick-start implementation of fantastic new biking and walking projects.
Dublin has now fully funded the future Iron Horse Trail bike and pedestrian bridge over Dublin Boulevard, thanks to a 1.5M award from SR2B. The bridge will close a gap in the trail system and safely connect riders with the Dublin/Pleasanton BART station.
ATP Quick Build Program
Richmond has earned a staff project recommendation for the Active Transportation Program quick-build pilot program, which if approved will fund two-way protected bikeways along Hoffman Blvd. and Cutting Blvd. to connect the Richmond Ferry with Point Richmond along the Bay Trail and provide safe access to the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Bike East Bay has been pushing for improvements to the Bay Trail connections in Richmond and will continue to partner on project implementation. There is approximately $20K in the grant for Bike East Bay and Rich City Rides.
