This fall, the City of Hayward is taking strides toward a more bike-friendly future. Just a week after approving a progressive new bicycle and pedestrian master plan, City Council voted to install two protected bike lanes as part of this year’s repaving program, on Huntwood and Patrick Avenues. With the striping already on the ground and final design features on the way, Hayward is on track to have its second and third protected bike lanes complete by the end of the year.
Building a safe biking network in South Hayward has been a priority for Bike East Bay for several years. The new quick-build lanes on Patrick and Huntwood are an important step toward the reality of a connected, protected network. As the first quick-build protected bike lanes for Hayward installed as part of repaving rather than a separate construction project, the rollout is taking some time as the city works with neighbors to make spot fixes, enhance the bike lane, and clarify the parking configuration. By mid-December, the new protected bike lanes will have green paint, bollards, and finishing touches near active loading areas.
When the projects are complete, South Hayward will have three protected bike lanes near each other, but not yet connected.
