Capitol Corridor Track Work

Author: bcomadmin

Date: June 5, 2008

The Capitol Corridor is usually very bike friendly. The restrictions on bikes for track work this month will be a challenge to rail-riding cyclists…

Service Advisory Overview

Union Pacific will be upgrading track infrastructure (primarily railroad ties & bridges) between Benicia (North of Martinez) and Suisun/Fairfield, installing approximately 40,000 new wood ties at their own expense. This is the second installment of a multi-year track upgrade project between Oakland and Sacramento, which will keep the railroad in good condition so trains can operate reliably.

This construction is expected to last approximately 4 weeks from June 3rd -June 28th, 2008. During the course of the track work, some morning and early afternoon Capitol Corridor trains will not operate between Martinez and Suisun/Fairfield. Instead, connecting buses will carry passengers between those two stations, and trains will operate on the remainder of the route on a modified schedule.

Bicycle Advisory

Due to limited space aboard motorcoach buses used during the bus bridge, Capitol Corridor strongly discourages cyclists from traveling with their bicycles on affected trains between Suisun/Fairfield and Martinez for the duration of the track work project, June 3- 28, 2008.

Bicycles will not be allowed in the bus seating area of the motorcoach buses. Bicycle storage space (underneath the bus only) is available on a first-come, first-serve basis as determined by the motorcoach driver; and first priority will be given to baggage. If storage space is unavailable, cyclists should be prepared to secure their bicycles a the train station or wait for the next available motorcoach connection with space available for bikes. Please be considerate of other cyclists and travelers when attempting to accommodate your bicycle for travel during the track work.”
