Women Bike Book Club

Author: Bike East Bay

Date: March 15, 2016

In partnership with Bike East Bay, the Oakland Public Library is co-hosting the Women Bike Book Club! Bike East Bay’s Women Bike program enters its fourth year of bringing women and gender nonconforming folks together in social settings to share experiences and resources with each other.

Everyone is invited to discuss biking, feminism, and the intersection of the two. Join us on the first Thursday of each month at 6:00pm. We’ll focus on a different book or film each month, with a few guest speakers and activities along the way.

Details for each month are on Bike East Bay’s calendar, usually about a month ahead of time. We usually have books available for free from several branches of Oakland Public Library, and an e-book accessible online.

Join us (even if you haven’t read the book – but did you see that there’s a free e-book available?) for snacks and good conversation.

2016 Archive:

For the August meeting of Women Bike Book Club, we’re taking a field trip! OVARIAN PSYCOS, the documentary story of The Ovarian Psycos Bicycle Brigade in East LA who ride in protest of violence in the community and against women, is showing at the Roxie in SF. Details here.

For our July meeting, we’ll watch Rodando en La Habana: Bicycle Stories, and have a discussion with one of the directors. We’ll also watch other short films about women and bicycling.

The third book is Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Irin Carmon and Shana Knizhnik. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg never asked for fame—she was just trying to make the world a little better and a little freer. But along the way, the feminist pioneer’s searing dissents and steely strength have inspired millions. As America struggles with the unfinished business of gender equality and civil rights, Ginsburg stays fierce.

The second book is Streetfight: Handbook for an Urban Revolution by Janette Sadik-Khan, an empowering road map for rethinking, reinvigorating, and redesigning our cities, from a pioneer in the movement for safer, more livable streets. As New York City’s transportation commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan managed the seemingly impossible and transformed the streets of one of the world’s greatest, toughest cities into dynamic spaces safe for pedestrians and people on bikes. The first book is Joyride by Mia Birk. Joyride tells the inspiring story of Mia Birk’s twenty-year crusade to integrate bicycling into daily life. If you ever wondered how Portland became a great city for bikes, and what you can do to make your city bike friendly, this is a good starting point.
Sunday, April 10 at 4pm The author may be video-calling in to our discussion!
