Kristin Armstrong became only the second American women’s cyclist to claim Olympic gold Wednesday, winning the 14.6-mile time trial in 34 minutes, 51.72 seconds, nearly a half-minute ahead of Great Britain’s Emma Pooley, who set a blazing early time and dared the women’s best to better her effort.
Of the 20 who tried, only Armstrong pulled it off. And with that, she joined Connie Carpenter-Phinney – the winner of the road race at 1984 Los Angeles Games – as the only American women’s cyclist to know the feel of Olympic gold.
Also Christine Thorburn of Sunnyvale took fifth place 1 minute, 2 seconds behind Armstrong. Check out the photos here. Hot!
In the men’s event Levi Leipheimer of Santa Rosa took bronze.
