We couldn’t ask for a better day for Bike to Work Day. Record number of cyclists, great weather, and one heck-a-fun After Party. Thank you for sharing your day along with the tens of thousands of people across the East Bay who rode to work, visited our Energizer Stations, and partied with Cyclecide, The Derailleurs and The Muddy Roses. Good news: with all ‘precincts’ reporting, we are thrilled to announce that bike traffic counts were up by 13.1% over last year, and a quarter of all traffic arriving at Sproul Plaza here in Berkeley was by bike! The cities of Alameda, Emeryville and Berkeley saw the largest increases over 2010, and several of the larger energizer stations in Oakland saw huge numbers of cyclists.
Across the country and particularly here in the Bay Area, people are taking to their bikes like never before. On this day, when we are all celebrating biking, we need you to take action to make sure that the Bay Area, and the United States, continues to move toward a place where more and more people feel safe and comfortable biking to work. The success of today’s Bike to Work Day shows that where we have invested federal funds in our streets people are biking in record numbers. Please act today to make sure we continue to get these much needed funds.
