Attempts to balance the budget by closing State Parks would have impacts on facilities that bicyclists use. Closure of Mt Diablo State Park roads would eliminate one of the most popular recreational routes for bicyclists in the East Bay. Nearby, loss of the level Bay Trail through the Benicia State Recreation Area would leave bicyclists traveling between Vallejo and Benicia with only an extremely hilly commute option. Samuel P. Taylor State Park offers a popular trail alternative to busy Sir Francis Drake Boulevard for access to West Marin County.
At a minimum, Bay Area bicyclists need to retain access to the roads and paths through Mt Diablo, Samuel P. Taylor, & the Benicia State Recreation Area.
A Glimmer of Hope
On June 15, 2009 the California Legislature’s Budget Conference Committee voted to eliminate general budget funding for State Parks (boo) and replace it with a new funding source: a $15 Vehicle License Fee increase dedicated for State Parks Operation (yea!).
If the new funding source does not survive the legislative process, then 80% of the parks close. If the new funding is finalized, then the parks stay open and move forward with a more reliable long term source of funding.
What You Can Do
Please use the above link to the California State Parks Foundation to contact your legislator. Please amend the text to emphasize bicycle access. An EBBC sample letter is available below.
New fees can be unpopular, and your legislators need to hear from you in support of Vehicle License Fees and retention of bicycle access on State Park roads and paths.
