Earlier this year Oakland set up temporary slow streets in Chinatown, on 10th Street and Alice Street right by the Lincoln Square Recreation Center. Eventually, with further street closures, the community recreation center could host kids activities on the street. Bike East Bay and Walk Oakland Bike Oakland have been working with the Lincoln Square Recreation Center staff to coordinate this slow streets programming, and next year more permanent upgrades are on the way. Visit the project website and give your input today.

OakDOT is planning more permanent improvements to 10th Street from Webster Street to Oak Street in 2021, and wants to hear your ideas. The repaving project provides a key opportunity to permanently achieve the goals of the Slow Streets project at 10th St. and Alice St., provide safer pedestrian connections between Chinatown and Lake Merritt, and create a calm and intuitive street for all roadway users.

There are opportunities for better bicycle connections, as well as a calmer street for pedestrians with more commercial activity. It could be Chinatown’s first significant streetscape changes in many years. Email your ideas to OakDOT planner Charlie Ream: [email protected].
