In this update to our Multimodal San Pablo Avenue campaign we are sharing news about projects in Oakland, Emeryville, Berkeley, Albany, and El Cerrito, along with a pothole reporting workshop we hope you’ll join us for!

A Safer San Pablo from Downtown Oakland to South Berkeley Can't Wait. Sign Our Petition to Demand Action!

"critical safety upgrades on San Pablo Ave delayed to 2033 or worse"

The construction start for Alameda County’s Downtown Oakland to South Berkeley protected bikeway and bus lane upgrades on San Pablo Ave has been delayed to 2030, at best.

With a three year construction timeline this means the soonest the project might be done is 2033 (more info from Oaklandside here).

The project cost also ballooned to a quarter billion dollars, none of which has been secured so far. Given the current funding climate at the state and federal levels, it could possibly be ten years or more before this project is completed.

The delay will have real-world safety impacts. Since 2020 there have been five pedestrians killed by drivers on this part of San Pablo Ave. In the same period there have been over 20 severe injury crashes.

Many of these crashes happened on the West Oakland segment south of West MacArthur Blvd, where the city has their own paving project planned for 2028.

Sign our petition below to help us urge Oakland DOT to implement safety upgrades on San Pablo Ave via this paving project, and not wait for the Alameda County project to come together before acting on these needs.

El Cerrito's San Pablo Ave Bikeway is Nearing Completion

This project near El Cerrito Del Norte BART is estimated for completion within the next few months. It includes protected bikeway segments on:

  • San Pablo Ave from Knott Ave to Potrero Ave (0.5 mi)
  • Cutting Blvd from I-80 to Key Blvd (0.3 mi)
  • Eastshore Blvd from Potrero Ave to San Pablo Ave (0.2 mi)

In addition the project includes new protected intersections, street trees and landscaping, bus boarding islands and shelters, pedestrian crossing upgrades, new traffic signals and streetlights, and more.

Some work is still on the way including bikeway separation, landscaping, and paving.

Check out the photos below for some details, and we look forward to an official grand-opening celebration in 2026!

San Pablo Ave "Parallel" Bikeways, North Oakland to Albany

Bikeway upgrades along “parallel” streets on each side of San Pablo Ave from North Oakland to Albany are on the way, with construction starting in 2026.

In addition to traffic calming and intersection treatments on the side streets, the bike boulevard crossings of San Pablo Ave are also getting attention.

This includes the mini protected bikeway segment from Clay to Brighton in Albany, shown here.

More details about some of the Albany treatments are included in this presentation file.

The rest of the project North Oakland and Berkeley plans will be posted to the Alameda County project page here before the end of 2025, so check there for information soon.
