Principles of website design

Having a high google “page-rank” is extremely important in order for the EBBC to get its message across. We do compete against well-funded lobbyist groups (who can buy their way to a top ranking). We need to be sure that your neighbors (and voters) reach an EBBC page anytime they do a web query on transportation, environmental, and especially bicycle-related issue.

Ultimately, it is about hits and pageranks, making website publishing unlike any previous form of communication — so try to wrap your head around some of these concepts:

  • Fresh content must be provided frequently — ideally on a daily basis. If users see the same static home page day after day, they will stop visiting.
  • Multimedia makes a site more attractive. Adding photos and clipart is very easy. Video is especially popular — if “Youtube” can make billions out of home movies of people’s pets, imagine what ebbc.org can do with video content.
  • Page ranks are determined by other websites linking to ebbc.org, so always try to provide links from other websites back to ebbc.org. If you work with other grassroots groups in the area, be sure they have a link to ebbc.org.
  • If you are a website “editor”, pay attention to the website statistics, to see what is generating the hits. You may find the results to be quite non-intuitive.
