Outreach and Communications Intern

Role

  • Promote Bike East Bay at events before and during Bike Month

  • Craft Bike East Bay’s online messaging around Bike to Work Day

  • Stipend: $1,000

Bike East Bay is seeking an outgoing, clever and fun Outreach and Communications Intern who can talk the talk, effectively communicating our message both in writing and face to face at public events, addressing a variety of people while maintaining a high level of professionalism. The hours for this internship are 12-16 hours a week and we seek a 10 week commitment starting March 21. Availability on Bike to Work Day (May 12) is necessary.

If you feel comfortable putting yourself out there, speaking confidently and professionally with strangers, and connecting with our online audience via blog posts, social media, and press releases, this internship will be a good fit. In this position you will gain hands-on experience representing and speaking for a well-established local nonprofit, take on leadership of outreach events, and hone your writing skills in a variety of mediums.

Communications responsibilities include creating a social media calendar, prepping posts ahead of time, drafting press releases, and writing blog posts for Bike East Bay, on a quick-turnaround schedule. A strong candidate should be able to grasp Bike East Bay’s goals and channel them when drafting our online messaging. Outreach responsibilities include representing Bike East Bay at tabling events, social rides, the Blessing of the Bikes, the Bike Happy Hour Party and much more. The Outreach and Communications Intern will report to our Events Manager Dave Mann and work closely with Membership Manager Ginger Jui.

This is a great opportunity to join a fast paced, hard-working team in a position that allows for creative thinking, public speaking, and portfolio building. Academic credit can be given by working with your academic institution’s internship program.

Requirements:

  • Strong oral communication skills – must speak clearly and persuasively in public and professionally engage with people who hold a variety of attitudes towards biking

  • Flexible writing skills – able to communicate our messaging clearly in a variety of mediums

  • Familiarity with social media platforms and basic computer skills

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and to carry collateral materials and displays

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Adaptability – Ability to tailor messaging to a variety of events and audiences

  • Outgoing, dynamic, and flexible personality

  • Familiarity with biking in the East Bay

  • Be a self-starter able to take initiative on individual projects

Helpful:

  • Experience managing volunteers

  • Commitment to building a bike-friendly East Bay

  • Spanish or Chinese Languages are a plus!

  • Have a flexible schedule and be willing to work odd hours

  • Photography experience

  • Graphic Design skills

  • Interest in creating vines, fun posts and being creative with communications!
