The Membership Manager mobilizes people for transportation justice by leading Bike East Bay’s membership, individual donor fundraising, and volunteer programs. Your work as Membership Manager generates powerful human and financial resources for building a sustainable and equitable East Bay. You thrive both behind the scenes and in front of a group, equally comfortable running complex workflows that require high attention to detail, deploying a group of volunteers for phone banking, and making a pitch to recruit new members at a street festival.
The Membership Manager reports to the Events Manager, works closely with the Membership Coordinator and Executive Director, and collaborates across the Bike East Bay team.
This is a full-time position based out of our offices located in Oakland, CA. Candidates are expected to work remotely through the coronavirus pandemic, with occasional in-office or on-location essential work duties requiring interaction with Bike East Bay staff or members of the public.
Duties include:
Membership Program and Individual Fundraising (60%)

Lead the membership and fundraising program with a focus on equity, inclusion and representation, valuing authentic relationships over transactions, and overcoming barriers to engagement for people of color and low-income communities.

Develop and implement strategies for retaining existing members and recruiting new members, including organizing mailed and digital membership appeals, phone banking, in-person outreach, and member activities.

Oversee member and donor stewardship, including timely member fulfillment, thank you communications, and donor cultivation.

Create and update member-related communications and collateral materials in collaboration with the Communications Director to support the strategic communication plan.

Lead the individual donor fundraising program, including setting goals, developing strategies, and monitoring team activities in collaboration with the Executive Director and Fundraising Committee Chair.

Implement Bike East Bay’s distributed fundraising model by leading stewardship and fundraising opportunities for the Fundraising Committee, board members, staff, and volunteers.

Solicit regular feedback from members to inform recruitment and retention strategies.

Track and analyze membership, donation, and engagement activities.

Administer and oversee development of Bike East Bay’s member and donor database.
Volunteer Management (30%)

Recruit, train, and manage volunteers for major Bike East Bay community events, outreach booths, fundraising, office volunteering, and other program needs.

Lead the Bike Ambassador program, training, leading and deploying volunteers as Bike East Bay outreach representatives at events year-round.

Publicize volunteer opportunities via email, Bike East Bay’s website, social media, and other channels.

Maintain records of volunteer activities and regularly review and evaluate the program.
Fiscal and Administrative Management (10%)

Create and manage the annual membership and donation program budgets in collaboration with the Engagement Team and overseen by the Executive Director.

Participate in quarterly and annual planning processes and regular program evaluation.

Supervise Membership Coordinator with weekly check-ins to coordinate on immediate tasks and long term goals.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

Highly organized with excellent time-management skills

Demonstrated ability to manage projects and meet deadlines within a team environment

Professional or volunteer experience in community outreach, grassroots community organizing, lobbying and political campaigning, membership-based non-profits, and social justice organizations

Experience in deploying constituent relationship management (CRM) databases to deepen member and donor engagement (CiviCRM a plus)

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Commitment to social and racial justice and familiarity with Bike East Bay’s mission to build bike-friendly cities and a more just and equitable transportation system
Physical Demands: The position frequently requires sitting (or standing if you prefer) for long periods of time using a computer monitor and keyboard. You must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds occasionally.
Work Hours: The regular work hours are Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. Position will entail work on some weeknights and weekends. Weekday schedule is flexible around event demands.
Compensation & Benefits:
The salary range for this full-time, exempt, salaried position is $55,000-$65,000. Bike East Bay provides a competitive benefits package including health and dental plan, match to retirement contributions, paid time off and holidays.
