Bike East Bay members make bike-friendly streets happen across the East Bay, and this Bike Month was no exception! Check out the epic recap below, chock full of more bike-friendly streets breaking ground and opening this spring. Not a member yet? Join today!

First of Bike Month: Livermore
First Street in Livermore was the first set of upgrades to open this Bike Month. Bumper protected green bike lanes, dedicated intersection, video bike detection, and more rounded out this new connection from downtown toward Springtown. Bailey Road: Breaking Ground
Contra Costa County has started construction of a redesign of the SR 4 freeway offramp at Bailey Road in Pittsburg. It’s kind of cool when part of a freeway is torn down to make way for a better bike connection, and it’s happening in Pittsburg/Bay Point. Once complete, a wide multiuse pathway will be constructed from Canal Road down to the BART entrance road. Bike East Bay has been active with the County, City of Pittsburg, and BART in this area since 2006 to better connect neighborhoods with the Delta de Anza Trail, Mokelumne Trail, Pittsburg/Bay Point BART, and retail stores for many years now. Funding has also been secured to continue the mulituse path north to the Delta de Anza Trail.

Gilman Groundbreaking
Decades in the making, a new bike ped bridge over I-80 at Gilman Street finally broke ground this Bike Month, as part of a new interchange/roundabout project. When completed in 2023, the fully separated bicycle and pedestrian bridge on the south side will offer family-friendly connections to the San Francisco Bay Trail, Tom Bates Sports Fields and beyond. Fly through the design here, and check out the virtual groundbreaking from May 20. Voters made this project happen in 2014 with passage of Measure BB.

Brentwood – Mokelumne Trail Bridge Groundbreaking
We are getting better at building safer streets for walking and bicycling to transit, but three years ago planning wasn’t so progressive. That’s when Antioch eBART Station opened, with no good bikeway from Hillcrest Road into the station. Thanks to demand for more car parking, we are getting a better bikeway, opening by end of Bike Month. A new bike path extends from the intersection of Hillcrest Road and Slatten Ranch Road to the entrance path to the transit station.

San Pablo Opens Wildcat Creek Trail
Birds are chirping along a new half-mile creek trail in San Pablo. Here is a great YouTube video about the project, which extends from City Hall to Vale Road.

Coming in June/this Summer

Rodeo: Lone Tree Point
Get ready for the opening of a new half-mile bike/walk trail past Lone Tree Point in Rodeo, a small but significant gap in the San Francisco Bay Trail. With a planned opening in June 2021, this segment extends an existing trail which connects to the future Hercules Intermodal Transit Station. With additional gap closures on the way, a safe, all-ages bikeway link between our Bay Trail in the East Bay and Vallejo is on the horizon!

Ninth Street in Berkeley
Opening this Summer, this final gap project will connect the Doyle Street Greenway in Emeryville with the 9th Street Bicycle Boulevard in Berkeley, across Ashby Avenue directly and not through Berkeley Bowl West. A controlled crossing of Ashby for the pathway will be timed to the existing traffic light for Berkeley Bowl West.

Fremont: Warm Springs BART west side bridge
A new west side pedestrian bridge opens at Warm Springs BART Station, connecting the relatively still new transit station with new housing developments on the west side of the station, and connecting to Tesla Factory.

Oakland: Tunnel Road/SR13 Intersection
Bike East Bay joined in a lawsuit in 2006 against the 4th Bore of the Caldecott Tunnel, pushing back against the traffic impacts the freeway expansion would have on people walking and bicycling in Berkeley and North Oakland. Finally, the last project from the $10 million in local safety improvements is built–a safer bike route and pedestrian connections along Tunnel Road at SR 13. There will be a wider bike lane the whole way and a dedicated bicycle traffic signal to stop freeway on ramp traffic as you bicycle up Tunnel Road.
