Hercules Wins $10 Million Grant for Bay Trail and Intermodal Station

Hercules has been awarded almost $10 million by the state in connection with a planned railroad station, the city manager announced Wednesday. The California Transportation Commission approved an $8 million State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) grant to build an intermodal ferry/train station, which would become a stop on the Amtrak Capitol Corridor. Additionally, the commission awarded two STIP grants totaling $1,959,000 to extend the San Francisco Bay Trail from the train station at Bayfront Boulevard to the Victoria by the Bay subdivision further north, including a stretch behind the Bio-Rad Laboratories campus. The Phase 1 intermodal segment is about a $20 million project, with the actual trail portion being about $2.8 million. The East Bay Regional Parks District is covering the cost of the trail Federal TIGER funds, Bay Trail, and STIP funds. The Contra Costa Transportation Authority is another major funder of this phase.
