Last Friday, Richmond and El Cerrito celebrated the joining of the Richmond Greenway with the Ohlone Greenway, a key commute corridor. More access is coming! From East Contra Costa to the Bay Bridge, new bike access and transit will improve your ride just in time for Bike Month.
Protected intersection opens on Bay Trail in Richmond May 8
Inspired by Pleasanton’s first protected intersection that closed a gap in the Iron Horse Trail, the new protected green bike crossings at Central Avenue and Rydin Road in Richmond will connect you smoothly to a beautiful shoreline stretch of the Bay Trail.
Bike East Bay encouraged the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) to redesign this intersection with dedicated bike crossings. CCTA agreed to go ahead with a “quick-build” protected intersection, using inexpensive, easy-to-install materials to improve safety sooner at this busy location. In the future, the project will be completed with permanent materials.
Emeryville dedicates Peladeau Park pathway on Bike to Work Day
On May 10, Emeryville Mayor John Bauters will kick off a Bike to Work Day celebration in Emeryville at Peladeau Park, a new linear pathway/park between Powell Street and Stanford Avenue. Bay Area artist Joey Rose will present his mural series celebrating Emeryville’s local ecology.
Caltrans tests 24-hour access on East Span of Bay Bridge starting on Bike to Work Day
Caltrans is ready for a trial run of 24-hour access on the Bay Bridge People Path. The ten-day trial period starts on the evening of Bike to Work Day (May 10) and runs through the morning of May 20. Muni line 25 runs every 30 minutes throughout the night to complete your transbay journey.
Caltrans and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission have committed to all-hour access for bike commuters, but want to test it out first because of security considerations. A successful ten-day pilot of 24-hour access will help secure all-hours access all the time.
BART to Antioch service starts May 26
BART begins service to Antioch on May 26, connecting riders from East Contra Costa County to the rest of the Bay Area. To celebrate the extension of the Pittsburg line by two stations, BART is hosting a community ribbon-cutting celebration on Friday, May 25 at 11 a.m. at the new Antioch station at Hillcrest Avenue. There will be a party with free preview train rides and local entertainment.
The new service corridor extends ten miles beyond the Pittsburg Bay Point station. Bike East Bay is working with the cities of Pittsburg and Antioch to improve bicycle routes to both new stations to connect you to this new transit service. In Pittsburg, there will be protected bike lanes on California Avenue to the new station at Railroad Avenue. In Antioch, improvements to Slatten Ranch Road at Hillcrest Avenue will reduce conflicts between freeway-bound drivers and commuters accessing the new station.
