From Fear to Freedom: My Bike East Bay Story (and How You Can Help)

In 2022 I started riding a bicycle for the first time as an adult to lose some pandemic weight and because I wanted to try out Fremont’s newly installed protected bike lanes. Biking around town was still pretty intimidating! Thankfully, I got a Bike East Bay flyer from my local bike shop and learned about the free classes offered.

I signed up for Urban Cycling 101 over Zoom, which immediately helped me feel better equipped and like bicycling wasn’t as dangerous and crazy as I had thought. Right after the class I joined Bike East Bay as a member. I couldn’t believe that the incredible class had been free, and I wanted to support Bike East Bay’s classes and advocacy. The membership was affordable, and the 10% discount from my local bike shop was a nice incentive.

I signed up for more classes, and even some volunteer opportunities with Bike East Bay. Through these activities I met many folks who were in a similar learning stage as me. I was hooked and biking around everywhere. As my confidence grew, biking became more than just a pastime— it was bringing me a deep sense of community and that we were advancing shared goals.

On Giving Tuesday 2023, I made the leap and joined the Monthly Giving Circle. Becoming a monthly giver just made sense for me given how involved I was becoming. It blew my mind how much Bike East Bay was accomplishing, and I knew how important it was to provide continuous support for this work. I deeply appreciate and respect Bike East Bay’s values, work ethic, and consistency, and after being a member for a year I was confident that my monthly giving would be put to great use in Bike East Bay’s hands.

In the time since becoming a monthly donor, my love for biking has only grown. I’ve been attending Fremont’s Mobility Commission meetings, I’m about to ride in my 3rd Climate Ride, and after lots of encouragement last year I became a League Cycling Instructor with Bike East Bay, and have had the joy of teaching 11 classes throughout Alameda County.

My Bike East Bay story began with a class, and now I get the opportunity to help other people along in their own bike journeys. I hope my story has inspired you and reassured you that your membership makes a difference.

Thanks for your support,
