Oakland’s Department of Transportation has scheduled a community meeting to inform the community about a traffic calming pilot project planned for Hillegass Avenue & Colby Street in North Oakland, anticipated for installations by June 2025. This project is being funded by Oakland’s Traffic Safety Earmarks budget set aside for every city council district (info here).
This meeting will start with a 30-minute informational presentation and then open up to community discussion.
Colby Street is an existing neighborhood bike route, with a goal for average daily car volumes under 2000, and average car speeds at or below 20 mph, per a national standard for all ages and abilities bikeways.
At the start of the pandemic Colby was part of the “Slow Streets” network with partial car diverters on each end of the corridor. Oakland has since developed new standards to help bring back parts of the Slow Streets program on neighborhood routes across town, starting with the 8th Street project in West Oakland that was completed in mid-2024.
