In May of last year we reported on the opening of Berkeley’s bike/walk bridge over I-80 at Gilman Street (read the blog post here), along with a short 2-way cycletrack segment to the east and a short Bay Trail gap closure to the west, leading to the former Golden Gate Fields racetrack.
In the meantime Caltrans has continued working on their “double roundabout” interchange which is now nearly complete. As freeway interchanges go this is among the better ones we’ve seen, providing a surface level bike/walk trail in addition to the overpass bridge, minimizing the crossing distance and wait time for people biking or walking, and reducing the conflict points with drivers.
The inclusion of the bike/walk bridge with this project was made possible after decades of advocacy from former Bike East Bay staff along with our partners at the Albany Strollers & Rollers and with Walk Bike Berkeley.
