East Bay Candidate for Deadliest Road for Cyclists – Hwy 84

Author: bcomadmin

Date: March 18, 2008

Hwy 84 No ShoulderView to the east on Paloma Rd (Hwy 84) in eastern Alameda County operated by Caltrans. I-680 in background. Approaching bicyclist rides the fog-line like a circus performer walks a tightrope!

Consider some facts:

  • Popular bikeway between Pleasanton-Sunol and Calaveras Roads (no alternative route)
  • Traffic exiting I-680
  • No shoulder.

What is most disturbing here is that this route is unnecessarily unfriendly! Unlike Hwy 84 in Niles Canyon (AKA, “lost bicycle habitat”), there is plenty of room to provide a shoulder on this critical segment of road.
