For the first time ever, traffic counts at Telegraph & Bancroft count more bikes than cars We felt the buzz and knew Bike to Work Day was going to be big. But who could have predicted the inundation of riders seen this morning on the streets of the East Bay. Bike Counts up 16% Bike counts at 143 energizer stations tallied 17,500 people riding, a 16% increase over last year. In the past 5 years, bicycling has increased 285% in the East Bay on our big day. For 2012, Dublin/Pleasanton and Fremont lead the way each with a 40% increase in morning bike counts, followed by Alameda with a 29% increase, and Emeryville with a 17% increase. Bike counts at East Bay BART Stations averaged 250 bikes per station-that’s a bike station! Media coverage of Bike to Work Day 2012 Great Photos of Bike to Work Day Eight Mayors Bike to Work Mayor Jean Quan of Oakland rode 8 miles on her trusty electric bike from Eastmont Mall to City Hall, accompanied by a large contingent of supportive riders. “Bicycling is a great way to get around the City,” said Mayor Quan. “You see more, get a little exercise and it costs zero dollars per gallon! I’m proud Oakland now has over 100 miles of bikeways and is recognized as a Bicycle-Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists.”

In Berkeley, Mayor Tom Bates led a bike tour of Berkeley’s bicycle boulevards and provided a sneak preview of the soon to open West Street Pathway, leading a large contingent of riders from N. Berkeley BART to the Berkeley Bike Station. “I’m so impressed at the number of people bicycling in Berkeley, and not just the numbers, but the incredible variety of cyclists riding, young and old, commuters, families. It is really impressive,” stated Mayor Bates. “As Mayor of Berkeley, our City is going to continue to take the lead in fostering our bicycling culture and set an example for the entire East Bay.”

Setting the example for this next generation was a record number of East Bay Mayors hopping on their bikes this morning and heading to work. In addition to Mayors Quan and Bates, Mayor Gayle McLaughlin from Richmond, Mayor Farid Javendal of Albany, Mayor John Chiang of Piedmont, Mayor Jennifer West of Emeryville, Mayor Stephen Cassidy of San Leandro, and Mayor Tim Sbranti of Dublin all rode this morning. More bikes than cars at Cal At Sproul Plaza on the campus of Cal, more bikes than cars passed thru Bancroft and Telegraph, as bike traffic there comprised 51% of all traffic. This a doubling of bike mode share at Cal. The Sproul Plaza energizer station also reclaimed its crown as the busiest station, with 726 bikes counted. Also for the first time, four energizer stations counted more than 600 bikes, including Downtown Oakland, Broadway & 27th, and Berkeley Arts Magnet School. It was only 2009 when we reached our 1st energizer station with 600 bikes counted. Record numbers of kids bike to school Biking to school numbers were hugely impressive. At Eastin Elementary School in Union City, 80 kids biked to school-amazing! Over 600 riders passed by Berkeley Arts Magnet School at Milvia & Washington. Alameda Safe Routes to School counted 1116 kids at over 20 schools biking to school this year, elementary thru High School. The next generation is re-learning about bicycling. 
One Kick-butt Bike Happy Hour Party Thousands of these cyclists celebrated at EBBC’s Bike Happy Hour Party – the biggest and most talked about Bike to Work Day after party in the Bay Area. Games a plenty were enjoyed by enthusiastic commuters on their way home from work. EBBC presented awards to the 2012 Bike Commuters of the Year from Alameda and Contra Costa Counties as well as recognized the 2012 Bike-Friendly Business Award winners, then danced in the streets to Planet Booty. Shout out to over 200 volunteers We owe a tremendous shout out to the best part of the East Bay Bicycle Coalition–our great volunteers. Thanks to their incredible work, over 200 volunteers, Bike to Work Day has expanded to all regions of the East Bay, and in a big way. And through the great work of our volunteers, we are changing people’s lives (and the entire region) for the better. We cannot thank everyone enough for making this wonderful event happen. We are treating all volunteers to a post-BTWD Volunteer Thank You Party June 14 at the Hot Italian Restaurant in Emeryville.
