Bike to Work Day started in the Bay Area in 1994 when the East Bay Bicycle Coalition and the City of Oakland got together to host the first morning energizer station and reward cyclists for commuting by bike and safeguard their bikes with secure, valet bike parking. Since then, the event has grown into a statewide celebration. In the last three years, participation has grown 250% in the East Bay and the event has expanded beyond bike commuting to include numerous fun events throughout the month of May. In addition to Bike to Work Day, the East Bay will also celebrate Bike to School Day, Bike to Market Day, Bike-in Movies, numerous bike rides and kids bike rodeos and festivals, and more. Together, bicycling is sweeping the East Bay and beyond as more and more commuters seek active lifestyles.
