Bike East Bay’s mission is to promote healthy, sustainable communities by making bicycling safe, fun, and accessible. We are seeking a leader who is confident, independent, collaborative, and approachable, demonstrates initiative, and operates in a dispersed leadership style that fits with and complements the strengths of our board and staff. Additionally, the candidate must have the ability to lead strategic and operational thinking as well as our equity and inclusion initiatives. This person will have a strong public presence and experience with relationship-building across stakeholders. An ideal candidate has a demonstrated ability to build respect and inspire trust and confidence in staff, board, constituents, and communities.

Organization Overview

Bike East Bay (formerly the East Bay Bicycle Coalition) was established in 1972 to promote the interests of bicyclists in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Our 4,000-member organization now includes local groups throughout the East Bay. In addition to advocating for better bicycling conditions, Bike East Bay also coordinates Bike to Work Day in the East Bay and has a successful bicycle education program offering free classes to 3,500 individuals a year. Bike East Bay is poised for growth.

Responsibilities

The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for implementing the strategic plan of the organization (BikeEastBay.org/mission) and reporting progress to the board of directors at bi-monthly meetings. The ED manages, develops, and empowers a staff of ~10 people to conduct effective bicycle advocacy, provide bicycling education, and engage our East Bay communities in building bike-friendly cities. The ED is responsible for managing a $1 million budget and fundraising through cultivating individual donor and business partner relationships. The ED must connect and engage with our diverse members and work to expand our membership base in keeping with our equity goals and values. The ED is a public face of the organization, speaking to media, government agencies, and other key stakeholders. Weekend and evening work will be required to attend board meetings, fundraising events, member programs, and other activities.

Overall Management of the Organization

  • Provide clear, effective, and inspiring leadership to the staff and public

  • Support and grow the values-based culture

  • Create and maintain a supportive, effective, and interconnected work environment

  • Develop an annual work plan and budget consistent with the strategic plan

  • Oversee human resources, including hiring, termination, benefits, and professional development; plan for necessary growth in staff levels and compensation

  • Effectively manage finances and risk, including cash flow, payroll, invoicing, payables, receivables, reporting, annual filings, insurance, and compliance

  • Continue implementing equity values and priorities throughout the organization’s work

  • Serve as liaison to our board of directors, and support board development

Fundraising

  • Oversee a comprehensive fundraising program to progressively grow the financial resources of the organization

  • Work closely with fundraising and membership staff and the board to expand our membership and create a culture of fundraising to support advocacy efforts

  • Engage with members, donors, foundations, corporate sponsors, partner organizations, and others as appropriate

  • Manage relationships and fundraising efforts with potential major donors and foundations

  • Support the creation of high-quality organizational communications, including website, blog, email newsletter, social media, and press releases that engage and inspire our members and other donors

Program

  • Oversee a comprehensive program to improve the safety and convenience of bicycling throughout the East Bay

  • Build relationships with elected officials and community partners, including affiliated local advocacy groups

  • Meet contractual obligations to agencies, fiscal sponsors, and allied organizations

  • Identify and support policy and legislative victories for people on bikes

  • Act as spokesperson for the organization with the media, government agencies, and other partners, including at public events

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Success leading advocacy work in sustainability, transportation, urban planning, land use, public health, or a related field

  • Deep experience and passion for social equity, transportation justice, and working with marginalized communities

  • A deep commitment to collaborative, team-based work

  • Adept in taking different leadership approaches in shaping a visionary, values-based, fast-paced, growing, and pragmatic organization

  • Ability to meld executive leadership style with staff and community cultures

  • A strong history of effective fundraising

  • Adept at finance and human resource management

  • Strong written and oral communication skills including representing organizations with the media and the public at large

  • Ability to maintain composure in challenging situations

  • Experience working in a membership organization

  • A deep commitment to Bike East Bay’s mission

Desired:

  • At least five years experience managing people, including a demonstrated ability to hire, coach, and manage talented and committed staff

  • Experience with bicycle advocacy

  • Skill at building coalitions

  • A consultant mindset with multiple styles of leadership and facilitation skills

  • Expertise facilitating participatory decision-making in an advocacy organization whose members hold diverse views

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize organizational efforts given input from a broad range of stakeholders and multiple competing interests

  • Expertise working with and developing a board including recruiting and retaining a strong, diverse, future-oriented board

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this full-time exempt position is $85,000 to $110,000 annually, based upon comparable nonprofit Executive Director salaries, and dependent on experience. Bike East Bay provides an excellent benefits package including 100% employer-paid employee health and dental, match to retirement contributions, and paid time off and holidays. Weekday schedule is flexible to accommodate the position’s requirement of some work on weeknights and weekends.
