Kids, Students, Teachers and Staff Get Rolling Bicycling to School

Bike Month is for bicyclists of all ages!
The East Bay Bicycle Coalition, Cycles of Change and Transform (Alameda County Safe Routes to School) are coordinating Bike to School Days, May 3 thru May 24, 2012, throughout the East Bay. Schools will be rewarding students, staff, and teachers who bicycle to school with musette bags full of goodies and incentives, and providing coffee, bagels, and snacks. Each school is selecting a date that works best for them within this nine day window. It all precedes Bike to Work Day on Thursday, May 10, 2012.

Win a Yuba Mundo Bike by competing in the Team Bike Challenge
Yuba Bicycles is giving away a Mundo family-style cargo bike to the parent-child team with the most points in the Team Bike Challenge this year in the East Bay. The Mundo cargo bike is great for families and can easily carry two kids, and some.

List of Schools Participating in Bike to School Day

This year more than forty schools throughout the East Bay are celebrating Bike to School Day during May. If you have a child at one of the following schools, be sure to pedal to class and join the fun. Pedal parades, helmet fittings and bike decoration stations are just some of the kid-friendly activities that will be happening.

Bike to Work/School Day has grown tremendously over the past three years, with bicycling more than doubling in the East Bay over that period. In fact, the fun and healthy event has outgrown itself. So, Bike to School Day is a stand alone event this Spring, and is part of many bicycling celebrations planned in May, including Bike to Work Day Thursday, May 10. It’s about more than work and more than just one day a year–and bicycling to school starts it all off.

Plan to encourage your school to participate by registering students, staff and teachers for the Bike to School Day (and Bike to Work Day), and start forming teams for the Team Bike Challenge, a month long competition encouraging team members to earn points each day in May they ride to school (or work) and Win a Yuba Mundo Bike. Registration for Bike to School Day and signup for the Team Bike Challenge has started.

If you are not a bicycle commuter yet, consider taking a free urban bicycle safety classes and learn how to get started (these are for bicyclists 14 years and older). For younger kids, they and their parents can sign up for a free Family Cycling Workshop.
