Community Engagement Director

Position Overview
The Community Engagement Director provides strategic leadership over Bike East Bay’s community outreach and engagement efforts, fundraising events, and corporate partnerships. This role directs the planning and execution of Bike East Bay engagement events, including two large-scale annual events, Bike to Wherever Day and Biketopia, while developing relationships with sponsors, community organizations, donors, and other stakeholders to advance the organization’s mission. The Community Engagement Director also oversees our bike valet and volunteer programs. The Community Engagement Director will report to the Co-Executive Director of Development and Engagement, supervise the Engagement Coordinator, and lead the Engagement Team.

Primary Responsibilities Include:
Community Engagement (15%)
- Lead initiatives to increase community participation across all programs and events
- Implement measures to improve event accessibility, including transportation options, childcare, and inclusive pricing
- Build and maintain relationships with community organizations throughout the East Bay
- Develop strategies to engage geographically, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities in our work
- Drive email list growth with a goal of adding 10,000 people to the list annually
- Lead planning and execution of Ladder of Engagement initiatives
Event Strategy & Execution (50%)
- Direct planning and execution of all engagement and development events including Bike to Wherever Day, Biketopia, community engagement events, and donor engagement events
- Oversee logistics, marketing, and day-of execution for all events
- Create and manage event budgets and resources to ensure financial targets are met
- Evaluate event performance and implement improvements
Partnership & Development (20%)
- Cultivate and manage corporate, government, and community partnerships aligned with our mission
- Develop and implement strategies to increase sponsorship revenue and benefits
- Create compelling partnership opportunities that provide value to both partners and our community
- Additional fundraising tasks not associated with events that will be determined based on the Community Engagement Director’s experience and interests, like:
- Cultivate, solicit, and steward a small portfolio of donors
- Write fundraising appeals
- Secure foundation grants
Staff & Organizational Leadership (15%)
- Directly supervise the Engagement Coordinator and oversee the Bike Valet team and volunteers
- Oversee the Engagement Team, including organizing and leading meetings and developing overall engagement strategy
- Develop and manage strategy for the Bike Valet program
- Participate in Leadership Team meetings and drive organizational strategic development
- With the leadership team, help set organizational priorities, measure and evaluate progress, and respond to emerging opportunities
- Create and manage the annual engagement, events, and valet budgets in collaboration with the Engagement team
- Prepare presentations for the board and stakeholders as needed, and coordinate with board fundraising committee on event planning and promotion

- 5+ years of event planning and/or project management experience, including experience with large and/or complex events
- An excellent supervisor who sets clear goals and expectations, encourages a healthy work-life balance, and promotes both personal and professional growth
- Commitment to social and racial justice and familiarity with Bike East Bay’s mission to build bike-friendly cities and a more just and equitable transportation system
- Experience in creating, managing, and tracking multiple program budgets
- Strong written communication skills including event, sponsorship, and fundraising emails
- Strong organizational and time management skills, including working with databases, using task management systems, scheduling events/meetings, and following up with partners and volunteers
- Outgoing, dynamic, and flexible personality with strong oral communication skills
- Willingness to travel locally and work occasional evenings and weekends
- Experience in drafting, reviewing and fulfilling partner agreements and contracts
- Proficiency with Customer Relationship Management platforms
- Fundraising experience
- Familiarity with event and city permitting systems in the East Bay
- Graphic design skills, ideally including Canva
- Familiarity with the geography (actual and political) in the East Bay
- Experience working with and among diverse communities
- Passion for bicycling and improving East Bay communities
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs
- Valid California drivers license
Physical Demands: Needs to be able to operate a computer for most of the working hours.
Location & Hours
This position is based out of our office located in Jack London Square in Oakland, CA and staff are expected to be in the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This position also requires other periodic in office and on site work, including occasional evenings and weekends, leading up to and following events.
Compensation & Benefits
The salary range for this full-time, exempt position is $90,000-$98,000, depending on depth of experience. Bike East Bay provides a competitive benefits package including health and dental plans, match to retirement contributions, paid time off, and holidays.
