Author: Bike East Bay

Date: February 1, 2022

5 street safety projects have been recommended for funding in Round 6 of the Affordable Housing Sustainable Communities grant awards, for a total of $10.3 million, and all include protected bike lanes. Getting safer bikeways are Cutting Blvd and San Pablo Avenue near El Cerrito del Norte BART Station, 40th Street in Emeryville, Decoto Road in Union City and two projects in Oakland: 14th Street downtown added funding, and 27th Street in Uptown. These awards are all part of the Cap ‘n Trade programs’ goal of building affordable housing statewide, and providing alternatives to driving. Round 6 funds $800 million in affordable housing statewide.

Here are the East Bay’s 5 projects:

  • Longfellow Corner in Oakland: a $19 million award for an affordable housing project at MacArthur Blvd and MLK Jr Way. Transportation improvements include $1 million for protected bike lanes and pedestrian safety improvements on 27th Street, from Broadway to Lake Merritt. This project is currently under design, and will need to seek additional construction money.
  • Lake Merritt BART in Oakland. A $24.4 million award for affordable housing at Lake Merritt BART, a project led by EBALDC. Included is $1.4 million of additional construction funding for 14th Street safety changes in downtown Oakland.
  • Mayfair Station in El Cerrito A $27M affordable housing project at El Cerrito del Norte BART. The project includes $2.9 for protected bikeways on San Pablo Avenue and Cutting Blvd, a project Bike East Bay has worked on for many years.
  • Nellie Hannon Gateway in Emeryville. A $20M affordable housing project that provides $3.8M for 40th St complete streets improvements, what is sure to be one of the East Bay’s showcase multimodal projects when complete.
  • Lazuli Landing Union City. A $21 million award for affordable housing along Mission Blvd that includes $1.26 million for protected bike lanes on Decoto Road, connecting to Union City BART Station.
