When:

Sunday, September 3, 2023 – Meet up at 9:30 AM in front of the SF Ferry Building –

ROUTE:

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/43986380

This is an unsupported, 45 mile ride, meaning that we will ride as a group but individuals are responsible for bringing their own food, water, tools, or anything else they will need along the way.

There are options for individuals to end their ride early at the Larkspur Ferry terminal around mile 20, at Richmond BART around mile 30, or at MacArthur BART around mile 40. From Treasure Island individuals can continue on by ferry or bus back to San Francisco, or bike another 7 miles back to BART in Oakland.

The pace of this ride will be medium-slow, averaging around 10 mph including stops. There are some hills including the climb up to the Golden Gate Bridge, Camino Alto, the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, and finally the Bay Bridge itself.

This route mostly follows off-street bike/walk trails and painted, on-street bike lanes, but there are several segments with shared bike/car lanes and no dedicated bicycle facilities.

This activity is open to everyone, but participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult and must wear a bicycle helmet as required by state law.

About OUR ‘Bridging the Bay’ campaign:

Ten years ago on Labor Day weekend, 2013, we inaugurated the brand new Bay Bridge East Span Pathway with a group ride from West Oakland BART. The contingent of bicycle riders on this ride numbered in the thousands. This path was the culmination of decades of work by advocates from Bike East Bay (then the East Bay Bicycle Coalition) and many other partners. It was a joyous occasion to ride the pathway for the first time,  we continue to love and appreciate this beautiful route above the Bay.

However, the omission of a pathway continuing along the West Span to San Francisco remains the most glaring gap in the Bay Area bike network. Plans for a West Span Pathway have been in the works since even before the East Span was completed, but seem to be in a constant state of always “ten years away”.

On this ride we will be celebrating the Golden Gate Bridge, Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, and Bay Bridge East Span paths, while also bringing attention to the need for completing the gap and expediting the construction of the West Span Pathway, turning a 45 mile loop around the Bay into a straight 10 mile ride from Downtown Oakland to Downtown San Francisco.
