April 2024 We Bike Book Club

We live on a bicycle planet. Across the world, more people travel by bicycle than by any other form of transportation.

In Two Wheels Good, writer and critic Jody Rosen reshapes our understanding of this ubiquitous machine over its more than two hundred year history.

Combining history, reportage, travelogue, and memoir, Rosen sweeps across centuries and around the globe, unfolding the bicycle’s saga from its invention in 1817 to its present-day renaissance as a “green machine,” an emblem of sustainability in a world afflicted by pandemic and climate change.

Readers will meet unforgettable characters and examine the bicycle’s past and peer into its future, challenging myths and cliches while uncovering cycling’s connection to colonial conquest and the gentrification of cities.

The book is also a love letter: a reflection on the sensual and spiritual pleasures of bike riding and an ode to an engineering marvel — a wondrous vehicle whose passenger is also its engine. (from the book jacket)

The We Bike Book Club is a joint book club run by OPL and Bike East Bay. WBBC is a community of people who celebrate bikes, books, and a more inclusive bicycling culture. We focus on voices and stories historically underrepresented in traditional bike culture, and occasionally expand our scope outside of biking to explore other related topics and stories.

We Bike Book Club meets bimonthly on Zoom on first Thursdays at 6pm. This winter/spring of 2024 we are meeting on February 1, April 4, and June 6. Co-hosted by Oakland Public Library and Bike East Bay.

This event is virtual. You will be emailed the registration link approxiamtely 24 hourse before the event. Register Below.
