All of us at the East Bay Bicycle Coalition were saddened to hear about the loss of Ed Tanaka, who passed away a week ago while riding his bike in Fremont. A longtime EBBC member and former president of the Fremont Freewheelers, Ed was a true champion for better bicycling in Fremont. Ed leaves behind his family and his many friends in the bicycling community. There will be a gathering at Berge Pappas Smith Chapel of the Angels to celebrate Ed’s life on March 23rd. We will do our best to honor Ed’s memory through our work making Fremont a better place to ride a bike. We were deeply touched to hear that Ed’s family has requested that in lieu of flowers, people make a gift to EBBC in Ed’s memory.
Dale, a fellow Fremont Freewheeler, shared these words: “Ed went out quickly in the way he said he wanted to — surrounded by friends, in his bike clothes, at the top of a hill, and under his favorite tree, the oak.”
We are honored to be the beneficiary of Ed’s request for gifts to support our advocacy work for better biking here in the East Bay. We received many generous gifts honoring Ed’s memory from the following individuals and groups:
