The Nickelsen Family’s Big Bicycle Adventure

“Over Christmas when my four year old niece started talking about camping, her mother (my sister) didn’t seem so excited. In fact, the thought of sleeping without a pillow terrified her, not to mention all the other discomforts associated with the great outdoors. However, with a little encouragement, she agreed to fly her family out from Massachusetts to go camping with us at Point Reyes National Seashore. This left us with an interesting challenge. How were we to get supplies for 4 adults and 5 young kids out to a campsite? Through BFBC we found a great bike trailer to haul everything we would need and more. The custom made Bikes At Work trailer allowed the parents to carry the small children (3 yrs, 2 yrs, and 4 months), while I pedaled out the tents, food, water, clothes, stove, etc. My father and I left early and loaded up the trailer. Once we got going things went really smoothly. We had a couple small problems that made it all the more an adventure. We were briefly stuck in some sand and near the end of the ride had a little trouble pulling so much weight up a small hill. I was very thankful to have my Dad there to help me. On the hill the heavy trailer pulled me backwards and I had to quickly jump off! As the whole rig dragged me back down the trail my Dad came to the rescue and together we pushed it to the top. We spent three days and two nights out there at Coast Camp and really had a great time. Because of the trailer I was able to make things reasonably comfortable for my sister’s family and I hope they will continue to take their kids camping in the years to come. I had so much fun pulling the trailer around that I can’t wait to do it again next summer. Only next time I’ll be prepared for the hills!” Sam Nickelsen Berkeley Resident BFBC member
