description

Castro Ranch Rd (El Sobrante? unincorporated CoCoCo?) is a popular road for bicyclists. Near Conestoga Way, there is a concrete median which makes the roadway narrow. Apparently a water line was replaced several years ago, and there are lots of potholes & seams (and debris) which prevent bicyclists from giving cars enough room to pass. UPDATE 3-28-17: Submitted to CoCoCo, citing my experience (twice last week!) on this same stretch of Castro Ranch Rd. UPDATE 3-30-17: Re-submitted to Richmond, as CoCoCo sent a map showing the line jags in & out, eventually putting this stretch in Richmond's domain. Unfortunately, the head of that department is on holiday until April 22. Have it marked for follow-up...

bike/ped path along Seacliff Dr - extremely slippery - needs warning signs

description

There's a lot of green slime across the bike-ped path. And, with all the rain draining across it, it's wet slime. While riding what I thought was a slow, careful pace uphill, my bike slid to the left, and I fell on my forearm, upper arm and rib, fracturing at least one rib. (Admittedly, my front tire doesn't have much tread, so I had negligible control. Even had I had more tread, I still think it's extremely dangerous.) While I'd generally ride downhill in the street, should anyone be riding downhill on the path, at a much faster pace, they'd incur more damage in a fall. I think signage needs to warn folks of the extreme slipperiness, encourage them to use the road, and alert cars that bikes may be using the road.

description

Drop off and pick up for Nystrom elementary school is in the bike lane on Harbor Way northbound, between Cutting and Florida Sudden moves in and out of bike lane when parking temporarily. Bike lane designated and striped while school closed for rebuild. No traffic direction or parent instruction to stay out of bike lane. UPDATE 10-28-16: Richmond's website doesn't have any clear contact info for parking enforcement, and this could also be mitigated by better signage and/or street markings. I suggested those items to the PW director, asking for guidance. UPDATE 11-2-16: PW head jumped on it: "I just sent out work order to add red curbs along the bike lane in front of the Nystrom Elementary School to prohibit parking. I hope this would help and the enforcement officers need it for enforcement too. Thanks for reporting." Let's hope the PD enforces...

Barrett bike lane at I-80 on-ramp

type

description

Heading east on the Barrett Ave bike lane, the intersection at the I-80 on-ramp is very dangerous. Drivers turning onto the ramp do not have an arrow light, and most DO NOT YIELD to oncoming bicyclists in the bike lane. The danger would be eliminated with the installation of a left-turn only light for cars going onto the ramp. It would be lessened with increased signage at the intersection. UPDATE 9-21-15: Submitted to Richmond PW. Awaiting reply, including verification of jurisdiction (Richmond or CalTrans).

type

debris in shoulder
insufficient shoulder width

description

North/Eastbound Richmond Parkway between Goodrick Avenue and Hilltop Drive, especially at the off and on ramps to Grant Road, has zero to a very narrow shoulder, which is covered in debris (dirt, broken lass, trash), forcing the cyclist into traffic lanes traveled by large trucks at relatively high speeds. Several passes by a street sweeping vehicle are warranted. (Overall, the whole of Richmond Parkway from Point Richmond to Hilltop Drive, both the bike path on sidewalk, as well as the bike lane on road, is littered with accumulated debris.) UPDATE 1-21-15: Submitted to Richmond PW - both engineering and sweeping contacts.
